Introduction

Enjoy the Swedish summer on this guided tour around the Skaraborg area. We’ll have the opportunity to visit Lurö, a peaceful island in the middle of Lake Vänern, and the blooming Mount Kinnekulle. Our journey also includes a guided tour of the old porcelain factory, “Rörstrand,” and shopping in the small streets and large market square of Lidköping. When the weather allows and the water is warm, you can go swimming in Lake Vänern. We combine good food, art and activities of your choice, including hiking, fishing, kayaking, horseback riding, or maybe just a bit of everything.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival/Stockholm

This tour starts at the airport, where you are met and transferred to your accommodation in the heart of Stockholm. If you arrive early, we recommend getting the Stockholm Card, which gives you access to most museums in Stockholm, the Stockholm underground and local buses. Stay the night in Stockholm.
 
Day 2: Stockholm - Skövde, Start of Guided Tour
Start the day by taking the train from Stockholm to Skövde. Find your way to Skövde Travel Centre, where you will be picked up at 15:00 for the 6-day, guided tour. The tour starts with a welcome picnic at Mount Kinnekulle, a picturesque place, where a nature guide will tell us what we’re seeing, smelling and hearing. We spend the rest of the day at the art and craft village, Falkängen. Stay the night at the Falkängen Hostel, where you can enjoy the sauna and big bathtubs.
 
Day 3: Mount Kinnekulle

We explore the scenic roads of Mount Kinnekulle by bike, visiting the mediaeval Husaby Church, beautiful manor-house gardens and the Sigrid Storråda Viking ship. You can also join an optional horseback ride up to the top of the mountain, where you have a spectacular view over the area.
After an active day, we treat ourselves to an exquisite dinner at Forshem Inn. The restaurant was established in 1564 and is Sweden’s smallest brewery. At night, retreat to your room at Falkängen Hostel.
 
Day 4: Rörstrand Porcelain Factory and Vänern Archipelago

Passing through the town of Lidköping, we stop at Rörstrand porcelain factory for a guided tour. Before lunch we’ll arrive at Spiken fishing village on Kållandsö Island, a nice village where they know all the best tricks for smoking a fish. Make sure to try it at the local restaurant. After lunch, we’ll enjoy a boat tour on Lake Vänern to Lurö Island. Our local guide will pick us up in his boat to take us through the lake’s archipelago, and tell us about the history of this large, beautiful lake. In the evening we will cook our own dinner together and stay in the old lighthouse, which has been renovated and transformed into a cosy hostel with all modern commodities.
 
Day 5: Lurö Island
We’ll spend a full day on the island. Relax in the hammock, try rowing the “allmoge” boat or just gaze at the horizon in all directions. You can also take an enjoyable hike around the island and to the ruins of a monastery. The water in the lake is so clean you can drink it, and there are no dangerous animals in the lake if you want to go swimming here. In the evening we’ll enjoy an evening together and barbeque on the beach.
 
Day 6: Läckö Castle

After breakfast, we leave for the mainland again and arrive at the foot of Läckö Castle, built in 1552; a local guide will show us around the castle. The following night is spent at Park Hotel in Lidköping, a beautiful, small hotel overlooking the park. We’ll dine out at one of the town’s quality restaurants. 
 
Day 7: Lidköping - Varnhem
Saturday is market day on the Lidköping town square, and the city truly comes alive. Along with the small shops surrounding the square, the market is well worth a visit. Coffee and cinnamon rolls at a local café are a must after a few hours of shopping. In the afternoon we head back to Skövde, stopping at Varnhem for a look at the convent church and the archaeological excavations taking place. End the day by taking the evening train from Skövde to Stockholm, where you stay the night.
 

Day 8: Departure
Transfer from Stockholm by Arlanda Express to Arlanda Airport. Passengers departing on the afternoon flight will have time to visit the old town and some of the museums, do some last-minute shopping or just relax in town.

Accommodation Details

We have two categories for accommodation on this tour: Budget and Comfort.

Budget

Accommodation in budget hotels, farmhouses, guesthouses and youth hostels. Most rooms do not have private facilities, but some of them have washbasins in the rooms. Breakfast is always provided and is included in the price. Bed linen is included in the price, but beds are not always made. In the more remote areas, most places of accommodation offer optional evening meals.


Comfort

Rooms with private shower or bath and WC. These are in comfort hotels or well-appointed guesthouses in the more remote areas. All provide breakfast (included in the price) and many have their own restaurant.
