Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Bubbles
On arrival, you will be met by your private chauffeur, who will transfer you from the airport to your hotel in Stockholm, where you are greeted with sparkling wine and chocolate. Stay the night in Stockholm.

Day 2: Gripsholm, Mariefred Castle and Vadstena
Start the day with a nice Scandinavian breakfast before you pick up your rental car and start your drive to Mariefred. Here you can take a leisure ride on the train at Mariefred Railroad Museum, dating back to the end of the 19th century and a must-see is the 16th-century Gripsholms Castle; enjoy the art collection inside and the castle’s well-preserved interiors from different epochs. Drive south towards Vadstena and visit the Cloister church and Vadstena Castle. Stay night in Vadstena area. Driving distance approx. 350 km / 217 mi.

Day 3: Candy Canes and Karlsborg
After breakfast we suggest that you visit Borenshult by Göta Canal River, where the manually operated Borensberg lock is located. Short cruises on the canal are offered and we highly recommend one. Also visit the Finnstigen open-air museum, which shows the history of the Finn blacksmiths who lived and worked in the area from the 16th century. In Gränna, a town famous for its sweet candy “polkagris” you can see how this delicious treat is made and find your own favorite. Drive around Lake Vättern and spend the night in Karlsborg. If time allows, visit the impressive Karlsborg fortress. Driving distance approx. 200 km / 124 mi.

Day 4: Karlstad and Rottneros
Drive south west towards Karlstad where you can visit some of the burial places from the Iron age for example the 11 stone ring. Also make a visit to the 270 year old Karlstad cathedral. After lunch in Karlstad you will drive to Rottneros Park, if you are up for a detour a visit to the Klässbols Linen Mill is recommended. Here you’ll find quality linen goods for sale. Products from Klässbol are used by the royal family, by Swedish embassies around the world, and by the hotels that accommodate the Nobel ceremony visitors. At Rottneros the first thing you will notice is that the air is invigorating and filled with fragrance. The beauty of hundreds of statues and of flowers and trees is overpowering. In addition, Selma Lagerlöf’s famous novel ‘The Story of Gösta Berling’ comes to life here. The ‘Ekeby’ of her book is synonymous with Rottneros Manor and its park. The book’s ‘Lake Löven’ is in reality the glittering Lake Fryken near by. Stay 2 nights in this area. Driving distance approx. 275 km / 171 mi.

Day 5: Explore the Swedish Countryside
Today is free for you to take in the stunning countryside that this area offers. Visit Mårbacka, home to the late Nobel prize winner Selma Lagerlöf, play golf at the nearby golf course or visit the lovely Sillegården for lunch and a stroll down to the water. At Sillegårgen they have a gift shop that offers handicraft and textiles from the area, locally produced items from the region and a lot of other interesting things. They also have ongoing art exhibitions.

Day 6: Västmanland Area
Today you will be heading back east. On your way to Skinnskatteberg you could make a stop in Grythyttan where the Grythyttan Inn is located and enjoy a lunch at the best known and most written about country house in the whole of Sweden. The proprietor, Carl Jan Granqvist, has succeeded in combining beautiful, historical interiors and grounds, exceptional culinary skills and the highest standards of comfort in what is a flourishing hotel with tremendous atmosphere. Skinnskatteberg is located in Bergslagen which is a large part of central Sweden, known for its deep forests, mining and metal industry. Nowadays there is no active mining, but you can still enjoy the beautiful stone pits, old mines and ruins of smelting-works and blast furnaces. This area also known for its many manor and country houses and you can also enjoy the impressive nature of Bergslagen with its magnificent tranquility and rich animal- and bird life. Stay the night in the Skinnskatteberg area. Driving distance approx. 245 km / 152 mi.

Day 7: The Many Lush Parks of Enköping and Stockholm
Today you will be driving back to Stockholm but don’t miss a stop in beautiful Enköping, a city known for its many and beautiful parks. In this area you will find three well-preserved medieval churches, all well worth a visit. Härkeberga church is built in the 14th century and the well preserved frescoes by Albertus Pictor are amongst the finest in the land. After enjoying your last hours of peace and quiet leave the small town for the bustling capital Stockholm. Drop off your rental car and spend your last night in Stockholm. Driving distance approx. 170 km / 105 mi.

Day 8: Departure

On departure you will be taken back to the airport by your private chauffeur. Passengers departing on the afternoon flight will have time for some last-minute shopping—a perfect way to end your holiday.
