This lively winter break is perfect for those who don’t like to sit still! When in Lapland, do as the locals and try out traditional means of transportation like snowshoeing under the moonlight, “mushing” with a team of eager huskies, and snowmobiling through the frozen wilderness. With cosy accommodations in Kiruna as well a rustic cabin far from the city lights, you will also have the chance to see the awe-inspiring northern lights.
Day 1: Arrival and Moonlight Snowshoe Trek
This action-packed holiday begins at Kiruna Airport where your local guide awaits to greet you and drive you to your cosy hotel in Kiruna, Sweden’s northernmost city located 145 km north of the Arctic Circle. As dusk settles, head out into the wild with your guide to try out the most basic mode of winter transportation—snowshoeing! Enjoy the serenity away the city lights and keep your eyes to the sky to catch a glimpse of the magical northern lights. Before returning to the hotel, enjoy a hot coffee and snack around a campfire in the woods.
* Please note that the northern lights (aurora borealis) are a natural phenomenon and sightings cannot be guaranteed.
Day 2: The ICEHOTEL and Snowmobile Adventure
After breakfast at your hotel, it’s time to head to the world-famous ICEHOTEL in nearby Jukkasjärvi for a guided tour. Every winter, this unique landmark is rebuilt by artists from all over the world using snow and ice chunks from the Torne River. Famous for its unique concept and dazzling works of art, this hotel also features the Ice Church and chic ICEBAR along with an astonishing assortment of rooms and suites for over 100 guests. After the tour, you are transferred back to Kiruna where you can enjoy a nice lunch at one of the local restaurants and relax for a while.
Around 15:00, you are picked up by your guide for your next encounter with Arctic transportation—snowmobiling! This exciting overnight snowmobile journey takes us through some of the most beautiful winter scenery as you glide through the snow towards your rustic accommodation for the night. Just in time for dinner, arrive to the cosy cabins where your guide will prepare a traditional Lappish meal for the hungry group. Although the cabins are without modern features like running water, the soothing Swedish sauna will make you forget all about the modern world!
Day 3: The Beauty of Nature
After a hearty wilderness breakfast together at the cabins, it’s time to hit the trail again for more adventure in the snow! Today’s route takes us near the frozen Torne River with possible sightings of local wildlife along the way including moose, reindeer, lynx, wolverines, and eagles. Far from human interference, this is an ideal opportunity to enjoy Lapland’s pristine nature and unspoilt landscapes. Later, return to the cabins for another tasty dinner together.
Day 4: Back to Civilization
Enjoy an energizing breakfast before you are being picked up and transferred to your next stop, a husky kennel, where you get to try yet another time-honoured mode of winter transportation—dog-sledding! Under the guidance of a skilled musher, you will learn to drive your own team of huskies through the breathtaking Lapland landscape.* The hard-working sled dogs howl and pull at their harnesses to get moving, showing you just how eager they are to start pulling the sled over the plains and through the woods. During the break, enjoy a hot coffee and a light lunch around a campfire. Back at the kennel, say goodbye to your trusty canine companions and then return to the hotel in Kiruna in time for a nice dinner at one of the local restaurants.
* There will be 2 people per dog sled taking turns with driving.
Day 5: Departure
After a breakfast at the hotel, transportation is provided to Kiruna Airport in time for your departure flight.
