Itinerary

A day-by-day plan to guide your Swedish road trip.

  • Day 1: WELCOME TO SWEDEN

When you arrive at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport, make your way to Stockholm city centre. Many travellers opt to take the express train to Stockholm Central Station, but we also offer direct private transfers. After settling in at your hotel, spend the day exploring the beautiful city. Stroll the well-known street Drottninggatan where you can shop and feel the vibe of the capital city. You could also go for a walk in the surrounding area of Östermalm, where you will find interesting shops, cafés, and restaurants for a perfect introduction to Scandinavian culture.

    Spend the night in Stockholm.

  • Day 2: THE CHARMS OF SWEDISH CULTURE

Today you will explore the heart of scenic Stockholm. We recommend exploring the capital by foot, visiting attractions such as the Old Town (Gamla Stan), where you will find the Royal Palace, the parliament, old churches, beautiful cobble stone streets and medieval houses.

After some time at Gamla Stan, you can take a short ferry ride to the nearby island Djurgården, a cultural oasis with something for everyone. Here you will find the kitschy Abba Museum, the Nordic Museum, the Gröna Lund amusement park, and the Skansen open-air museum. It is ideal to spend the afternoon here, exploring the grounds and many attractions.

    Spend the night in Stockholm.

  • Day 3: SCENIC RAILWAY JOURNEY TO MALMÖ

After breakfast, it’s time to board the train to Malmö, Sweden’s third largest city. During your journey, relax and enjoy the idyllic scenery of the southern Swedish countryside as you envision the exciting activities that await you! After arriving and settling in at your hotel in Malmö’s city centre, we recommend a visit to Lilla Torg. This marketplace is a popular local meeting point and one of the cosiest places in the city, offering a wide variety of restaurants and cafes.

    Spend the night in Malmö.

Train duration: Approx. 4 hours, 30 minutes

  • Day 4: A DAY OF DISCOVERIES IN MALMÖ

Today you will continue to enjoy the Malmö area. We recommend visiting Slottsholmen where you find the Malmöhus Castle, a Renaissance castle and fortress with an intriguing history, as well as Malmö Art Museum. You can also head down to the harbour to get a closer look at the Turning Torso, a remarkable skyscraper that twists 90 degrees from top to bottom.

Another possibility is to take the train over the nearly 8 km (5 mile) long Øresund Bridge (Öresundsbron), to Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. Here you can visit all the main sights, such as the famous Little Mermaid statue, the National Museum and Christiansborg Palace, the Ströget shopping street as well as the always entertaining, Tivoli.

    Spend another night in Malmö.

  • Day 5: TRAIN RIDE TO GOTHENBURG

After breakfast, head to the train station for your journey to yet another exciting city and admire the beautiful landscapes on the ride to Gothenburg, Sweden's second largest city. Once you have arrived and settled in at your hotel in Gothenburg’s city centre, we highly recommend a leisurely walk down Avenyn, the main shopping street that is full of interesting stores, fine restaurants, and quaint, colourful buildings.

    Spend the night in Gothenburg.

  • Day 6: FREE TIME TO EXPLORE GOTHENBURG

Spend the day discovering more of Gothenburg. We recommend a visit to the Feskekôrka fish market, the bountiful botanical gardens and the fun Liseberg amusement park. Art lovers should make a stop at the Gothenburg Museum of Art followed by an afternoon Fika in Haga, which has charming cobblestone streets, and 19th century houses with wooden facades.

    Spend the night in Gothenburg.

  • Day 7: RETURN TO STOCKHOLM

Today you will board the return train to Stockholm, and the rest of the day and evening is free for you to enjoy Stockholm at leisure. Once in Stockholm, we recommend the panoramic view from Fjällgatan in Södermalm , and whilst here, do not miss a visit to the bohemian area of SOFO – “South of Folkungagatan”. This area has an architectural mix of historical red wooden houses with early 20th century houses. There’s also vintage shopping and cosy cafés, where you can enjoy Swedish “fika”.

In the summer months, you can spend the afternoon at Fjäderholmarna, the closest of Stockholm’s Archipelago islands, where you can take a guided tour, browse the local handicrafts and enjoy an authentic Swedish dinner.

    Spend the night in Stockholm.

  • Day 8: STOCKHOLM AND DEPARTURE

Enjoy one last breakfast before it’s time to check out of your hotel. Passengers departing with the afternoon flight will have time for some last-minute shopping, sightseeing, or some time relaxing at a café while reflecting on your time in Scandinavia.

Reviews

We don’t like to brag, so we’ll let our happy customers do it for us.

Highly recommend

Next time I go to Scandinavia, I'll definitely keep Nordic Visitor in mind. They booked us great hotels that were centrally located and made it easy for us to tour every location at our own pace. The timing of travel was well considered so we could grab breakfast before our train to the next location, our accommodation were lovely, and communication leading up to our trip was smooth, even given the time difference. Highly recommend.

Well-organised

Everything was well-organised and well-timed. The hotels were generally excellent and well-placed. The trains were superb.

So nice

It was so nice to be able to leave hotel and train ticket booking to someone else! At the same time, there was maximum flexibility to suit myself about arrival and departure dates within that 8-day period, as well as the specific things I wanted to do in Sweden. I had asked my Nordic Visitor agent about the possibility of early check-in at my Stockholm hotel on my arrival date and she got back to me promptly. I did indeed manage to check in early, some time around 11 or 11:30 AM (much appreciated after an overnight flight from Toronto and 6-hour time difference!).

Amazing trip!

This was my first trip with Nordic Visitor. We went to Sweden and had an amazing trip! I will gladly use their services again to travel.

Wonderful travel consultant

Annie, our travel consultant, was wonderful, responded quickly and clearly to all emails. One of our trains required a short bus ride at the end because of construction and she let us know that ahead of time. We were able to relax and enjoy every day because Nordic Visitor had done all the work and provided us with everything we needed. The accommodation was great, and well located (excellent breakfasts included). We were able to walk to almost all the places we wanted to visit. The train rides were smooth and enjoyable with comfortable seating.

Can't recommend Nordic Visitor enough

We had a fabulous time! The accommodation was all centrally located, all within walking distance of the train stations and very comfortable. The breakfasts were hearty and full of every possible breakfast choice. Our agent, Irja, booked everything properly and answered our questions in a timely manner. She went above and beyond by contacting us and proactively booking flights when the trains in Sweden were going to strike. We were very grateful to her. Can't recommend Nordic Visitor enough.
