Introduction

This family-oriented self-drive tour will give you many unforgettable moments and the chance to see some of the best parts of Sweden. The itinerary gives you the opportunity to choose between many interesting attractions suitable for the whole family in a leisurely pace.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival
This tour starts at the airport, where you are met and transferred to your accommodation in the heart of Stockholm. If you arrive early, we recommend getting the Stockholm Card, which gives you access to most museums in Stockholm, the Stockholm underground and local buses. A visit to the Vasa Ship Museum and the City Hall, with its famous Blue Hall, where the Nobel Prize banquet is held each year, is highly recommended. Stay the night in Stockholm.

Highlights: Stockholm, Vasa Ship Museum & City Hall

Day 2: Stockholm by Bus and Boat
After a nice breakfast at the hotel you will join a 2.5-hour Stockholm Sightseeing Tour, viewing the most significant places in the capital, including the Old Town and Djurgården, the king’s ancient hunting grounds. After the bus tour you will continue by boat to see the closest of the Stockholm archipelago islands. This combined bus and boat tour really gives you Stockholm in a nutshell.

In the afternoon we recommend a visit to Djurgården, where many of Stockholm’s most popular attractions are located. We recommend a visit to Skansen open air museum and zoo where you can see both domestic and exotic animals as well as an exhibition of old Swedish houses. You can also stop by the Aquaria Water Museum to take a tour in the Amazonas jungle and for younger children we highly recommend a visit to Junibacken where you can meet many of the characters from the world famous author Astrid Lindgrens books. Another fun place to visit is the amusement park Gröna Lund with its many thrilling rollercoaster’s and Merry-go-rounds.

Highlights: Old Town, Royal Castle, City Hall, Fjällgatan, Djurgården, Skansen open air museum and Zoo, Aquaria Water Museum, Junibacken & Gröna Lund amusement park

Day 3: Castles on the way to Örebro
From Stockholm, you will drive west through an area famous for its many castles and manor houses, and explore the 16th-century Gripsholm Castle—enjoy the art exhibition inside and the castle’s well-preserved interiors from different eras. You may also want to take a leisure ride on the train at Mariefred Railroad Museum, dating back to the end of the 19th century. Continue towards Eskilstuna, where you can visit the Rademachersmedjorna, a 17th-century blacksmith community, where the smiths are still busy with their craft. Head on to Örebro where you will spend the night. Driving distance approx. 210 km.

Highlights: Gripsholm Castle, Mariefred Railroad Museum & Rademachersmedjorna

Day 4: Open air museum and thrilling waterslides
After a hearty breakfast, see the open-air museum in Wadköping, with its beautiful old buildings, craftspeople and shops. Also visit the 14th-century Örebro Castle and join a guided tour to learn about its remarkable past. We also recommend a visit to Gustavsvik, one of Sweden’s most visited tourist and leisure facilities. It is an all year round facility where the smash hit “Upplevelsebadet” (the Adventure Pool Area) attracts large crowds from way beyond the borders of Sweden. Spend the night in Örebro.

Highlights: Wadköping open air museum, Örebro Castle & Gustavsvik.

Day 5: Going to Gothenburg
Enjoy a generous breakfast buffet before it is time to get going again. Drive south towards Gothenburg, Sweden’s second largest city. On the way explore the impressive locks of Göta Canal in Sjötorp. The Göta Canal is one of the most remarkable waterways in the world and one of the communication links between Sweden's two largest cities. The canal itself is 190 km long, most of it dug out by hand. The next city on route, Mariestad, makes a perfect stop for lunch. The beautiful wooden buildings of Old Town were erected in the 18th and 19th centuries and are still almost perfectly intact. Wander around on your own among the charming wooden buildings or go on a guided city tour.

If your children, like most kids do, loves Tivoli’s and aqua parks a visit to Skara Summerland is a must! This is Sweden’s largest amusement park and a visit will definitely make you popular amongst the youngsters in the car. End the drive in Gothenburg where you will spend the next two nights. If you arrive early to Gothenburg we highly recommend a visit to the amusement park Liseberg, located in the middle of the city or a stroll at “Avenyn” the main shopping and restaurant street. Spend the night in Gothenburg. Driving distance approx. 290 km.

Highlights: Göta Canal, Mariestad, Skara Summerland & Liseberg

Day 6: Gothenburg Sightseeing
Spend the whole day in Gothenburg, shopping, sightseeing or just relaxing. You can also take a guided boat tour on the canals of Gothenburg or visit the amusement park Liseberg or one of the many museums if you didn´t had time for that yesterday. Spend the night in Gothenburg.

Highlights: Gothenburg

Day 7: Borås Zoo and Candy Canes
Today you will start your drive northeast. On the way you will pass Borås famous for its large zoo with both domestic and exotic animals. We also recommend a stop in Gränna where the striped candy canes were invented in 1859. Visit one of the shops and see how this delicious candy is made. End the drive in Vadstena, beautifully situated by Lake Vättern. In the centre of Vadstena, right beside Lake Vättern, you will find Vadstena Castle, one of Sweden’s best-preserved Renaissance castles. Spend the night in Vadstena. Driving distance approx. 245 km

Highlights: Borås Zoo, Gränna & Vadstena Castle.

Day 8: Back to Stockholm
See the sights around Vadstena Castle, the Cloister and the little 12th-century town itself before starting the drive back to Stockholm. We recommend a stop in Linköping to visit the open-air museum “Old Linköping,” which shows how a small town in Sweden looked like hundred years ago. You can visit the houses and see how Swedish people lived in the old days. A nice stop for lunch would be in the pretty little town of Trosa by the coastline. You can also visit the 18th-century Tullgarn Castle, which features some of the most beautiful interiors from the period. At arrival to Stockholm, return the rental car and check in to your centrally located hotel. Rest of the day is free to explore Stockholm with its many restaurants, cafes and bars. Driving distance approx. 265 km.

Highlights: Vadstena Castle, Vadstena Cloister, Old Linköping, Tullgarn Castle & Stockholm.

Day 9: Departure
Enjoy one last Scandinavian breakfast before it is time to check out from your hotel. Transfer is provided from your hotel to Arlanda airport. Passengers departing with the afternoon flight will have time for some last-minute shopping, a perfect way to end your holiday.

Note: Extra days and activities in Stockholm or in other places before or after the tour can easily be added to this package; contact us for details.
