Jennie was absolutely TERRIFIC in providing prompt service and information. A great ASSET to your organization!!! The ability of Scandinavian people to communicate in English greatly enhanced our travel experience in Sweden!! I highly recommend that all travel/tourist brochures/websites/media highlight this.

All of our hotels were much higher quality than we would have booked ourselves. They were wonderful and the breakfasts were fabulous. The personnel were so friendly and often went out of their way to help. We appreciated the markings on the maps. The only bit of complaint we had was that the young man at the car rental did not give very good directions to the car garage. It was hard for my husband to walk that far. We should have called a taxi. The GPS in the car gave good directions. My husband was not used to the gas saving engine shut off and he thought there was something wrong with the car. I presumed it was to save gas, and he finally got used to it. The best part was that we found where my grandparents had lived and were born. Thank you for giving us extra time in the locations where we needed to hunt.
Thanks for all your answers ahead of time and for working out the details. The trip was wonderful and the adventure of a lifetime for our age.

Sweden – and the wider Scandinavian region (with Norway and Denmark) – is a delightful vacation spot. In summer you can explore Sweden’s beautiful lakes, forests, islands and beaches. In winter you can stay in an ice hotel, go dog sledding and snowmobiling, or even hunt for the northern lights.
People in Sweden speak Swedish, a Germanic language. English is widely spoken, though, and many restaurants provide menus in English, so you will easily get by without knowing any Swedish.
Sweden is one of the best countries in the world to see the northern lights (aurora borealis). Head to Swedish Lapland, the northernmost part of the country, to increase your chances of spotting this natural light show.
Swedish Lapland is located in the Arctic Circle, close to the North Pole where aurora activity takes place. It’s important that you time your trip for the winter, as you need the dark nights to be able to see the colourful lights. In summer the skies are too bright to spot them.
Learn more about the best time and place to see northern lights in Sweden on our experts’ blog. Or find out where and where to see the aurora borealis in Northern Europe.
There’s a wide range of activities awaiting you in this gorgeous Scandinavian country. Here are our top recommendations on what to do on your Sweden vacation:
- • Admire regal palaces such as the UNESCO World Heritage site, Drottningholm Palace
- • Celebrate the summer solstice in June at a traditional and lively Midsommar festival
- • Hike, bike, or wild swim in the Stockholm archipelago, a collection of forested islands
- • Revel in Sweden’s café culture with a fika (“coffee break”) and try a classic cinnamon bun
- • Cycle along the pretty streets of Gothenburg and discover the country’s largest botanical garden
- • Tour centuries-old forts like the castles of Borgholm, Malmöhus, Örebro and Gripsholm
- • Stroll through quaint medieval towns like Ystad and marvel at the megalithic stones of Ales Stenar
- • Search for the aurora borealis in Swedish Lapland, which lies in the “Northern Lights Belt”
- • Explore the dazzling, snowy landscapes around Kiruna by dog sled, snowmobile or snowshoe
- • Sleep in one of the world’s most unusual hotels, the ICEHOTEL, which is rebuilt each year

For a summer vacation in Scandinavia, you could start your tour in Stockholm. This is the capital and largest city in Sweden, spread over 14 islands in the Baltic Sea. Or for a winter trip to Lapland, head to Kiruna, the country’s northernmost city and a mecca for northern lights viewing.

Sweden is a year-round destination, so you can choose when to go according to the sights and activities you’d like to experience.
For example, to enjoy activities like hiking, visit Sweden in summer. Between June and August, you’ll find that the days are long and the weather is pleasant, so it’s a great time to be outdoors. Many city-dwellers hotfoot it to the countryside and stay in rural cottages or go wild camping.
From late May to mid-July, Stockholm experiences around 18 hours of daylight each day, while in Swedish Lapland the sun doesn’t go down at all. This phenomenon is called the midnight sun and it occurs in places that lie within the Arctic Circle and Antarctic Circle.
You could time your trip for late June to catch the summer solstice celebrations in Sweden. Watch or join in with the locals as they enjoy this exciting day in their calendar, spending the longest day of the year singing and dancing.
Alternatively, the shoulder season – spring or autumn – is a good time to visit Sweden for the chance to see blooming flowers or golden trees respectively. Compared to the popular summer months, you’d have a quieter experience, but still with some sunny weather and fairly long days.
Finally, consider visiting Sweden in winter to watch the northern lights and surround yourself with snow-laden scenery. Escape to Swedish Lapland between December and March to experience a true winter wonderland, where you have a good chance of spotting the aurora borealis. You could even stay in an ice hotel!
Although winter is not a good time for driving in Sweden, due to the tricky road conditions, it’s great for peace and quiet. Travel by train and cruise in the Scandinavian Triangle instead to experience the capital cities between October and April.
